A kettle thermostat is an electronic device which controls the temperature of water inside a kettle. It works by constantly switching the current on and off. This allows for precise control of the temperature of water. The temperature of water inside a kettle will never exceed the thermostat's set temperature. Ideally, a kettle thermostat should be cleaned once a month.
You can buy a replacement thermostat at a parts and spares store. These devices are usually found under the base of the kettle. You will have to check the model and make sure it is the right one for your kettle. If the thermostat pin melts, it will need to be replaced. If you don't know how to replace it, you can take it to a parts and spares store.
The most common cause for a broken kettle thermostat is the pin. If this pin has melted, it will prevent the kettle from shutting off. The most common way to test if the pin is broken is to look for cracks in the pin. A broken pin will cause the kettle to boil without shutting off.
The boiling point of water varies depending on the temperature and impurities in the water. For example, water is 100degC at sea level, but it lowers by 0.5degC for every 150m of altitude. In places like the Dead Sea, the boiling point of water is much lower than 100degC. If your kettle thermostat were designed to stop boiling before that point, your water would never come to a boil!
